Super Bowl 2018 ad mood was decidedly somber. It’s not every day a consumer-facing brand makes a spokesperson out of a tragically deceased young boy. This year marked a clear return to lighthearted tropes of yore: animals, topical jokes, and a passel of celebrities. The result was less of a downer. But this was an evening of meh—a sloppy game, with few memorable moments, paired with a forgettable slate of ads.
